Alfred wrote most, if not all, of this day-book.  Various notes:

Employees: Twice, Alfred listed his monthly employees (mensuales) & their wages: May 26 (24 employees, $493) & September 4 (15 employees, $339).  Note that, in addition to wages, the employees were provided food: meat (3-4 kg. per day), yerba, sugar, salt, maiz, & rice (see April 22 & Oct. 25).  Housing was provided, albeit constructed of logs or mud & straw (chorizo), with dirt floors, e.g. puestos.  Alfred’s own living conditions and housing likely were not much better.  Though we have not found mention in his diaries of its construction, his house was probably made of brick.  For the first time, he lists a “house-keeper”.  His house must have had several rooms for friends and neighbours were constantly staying overnight.

The May 26 list is the most detailed.  He even includes the Comisario!  Below, we list the employees, in the same order as he did.  For comparison, we converted pesos 1900 to USD 2020 as follows: (1) Pesos to Dollars per gold prices in 1900, (2) Dollars 1900 to 2020 per US-CPI, (3) one peso in 1900 is then equivelent to U$D 14.34 in 2020).

Horse thefts by indians:  Thefts happened every few months.  The estancieros and their men would give chase, losing track a few days later amongst the lagunas and esteros to the north.  Some horses were recovered, escaped or abandoned by the indians, some were recovered by the army.  There were no armed confrontations.  Alfred describes the chases in which he partook:
