Benitz Family Album c.1870

The following images were scaned from an old album with a locking clasp.  The photographs were probably taken in Oakland, California, between 1868 and 1874.  The album was discovered at estancia "La California" in the late 1960's and became the possession of Corina Pryor (eldest child of William Agar Benitz).  Today, 1999, the album is in the care of Jill Hudson (née Pryor) and the following images were kindly provided by her son, John.

We do not know who identified the people in the photographs but it was very likely one of William A. Bz's sisters living in Argentina.  The names of the people are written in pencil at the top of each page in uneven block letters, as if the person had difficulty writing.  Pictures marked unknown were likely given to the family before they left California in 1874.  It was customary at that time to give friends pictures of oneself.
