The following images are from an old album with a locking clasp. Most of the photographs were taken in Oakland or San Francisco, California, between 1868 and 1874. It must have belonged to one of Wilhelm & Josephine’s children, but we don’t know which of them. It was discovered at estancia “La California” in the late 1960’s and became the possession of Corina Pryor (eldest child of William A. Benitz), and then of her daughter Jill.
Three of the pictures are labelled “Schreiber?” If these are of John Schreiber, and we have our doubts, (i) they would have been taken later (after 1875) in Argentina; and (ii) the album may have belonged to daughter Josephine.
The following images were kindly provided by Jill’s son, John. We do not know who identified the people in the photographs but it was very likely one of W&J’s grandchildren, the children of William O. Benitz living at “La California”. The names and dates of the people are written in block letters in pencil at the top of each page.
